At St Michael’s Church of England Primary School, we aim for a high quality RE curriculum where we follow the scheme Understanding Christianity and the Curriculum Kernewek, which is part of the New Agreed Syllabus and included other faiths. The New Agreed Syllabus and Understanding Christianity are spiral which ensures that the RE curriculum is progressive and builds on children’s prior knowledge. The Understanding Christianity units are led by a sequence of frieze frames that provides children with a broad, balanced curriculum where they can be practical, creative and critical. The children develop their own thinking and understanding of Christianity as well as their understanding of the world and personal experiences within. Children will be developing their skills to interpret biblical texts and looking at how Christians follow these teachings, as well as reflecting on their and understanding the world. Our RE is tailored to encourage children to enjoy RE with a progressive coverage. Children in KS1 will be learning teaching of these religions: Christianity, Judaism and Muslim. In KS2 the children learn the teachings of these religions: Christianity, Judaism, Hindiusm and Muslims.
We want our children to enjoy and love learning about Religious education by gaining this knowledge, understanding and skills, not just through experiences in the classroom, but also educational visits for example to the church and other religious places to enabling high quality Religious education.
Implementation:
In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in Religious Education, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. It is carefully planned out to ensure children have an even coverage and build upon this coverage within each year group. Implementing the Understanding Christianity with Curriculum Kernewek embedding into this scheme, has meant re-designing our long term plan, where knowledge and skill have been made explicit and progressively built into sequences of lessons. Staff meeting time is also used effectively, to gather evidence, ensure progression and make adjustments where necessary to enhance pupil engagement. As well as ensuring all staff are confidence, enthusiastic and passionate to deliver our RE curriculum. At St Michael’s, we recognise the importance for children to gain ‘real-life’ experiences through hands-on, practical activities. We ensure this through the practical work we do in the classroom as well as taking part in educational visits. For example, the children will visit the church and other local religious places. As well as this many children throughout all year groups have the opportunity to take part in our RE by delivering assemblies to the whole school.
Impact:
The impact and measure of this is to ensure that children are equipped with a progressive, broad subject knowledge about religions and understanding of the world. The children will be reflective, resourceful, innovative learners. As well as developing a broader understanding of the world. We hope that with our inspiring teachers and Religious education curriculum will encourage the children to enjoy and broaden their knowledge and understanding to positivity shape their future. Our overall aim is to see pupils leaving school with a coherent understanding of Christian belief and practice. As well as a significant understanding of concepts within Christianity, wider religions and theological and cultural literacy.
